Advances in sensor technology and computing are reshaping how we monitor the health and behavior of modern structures. In this featured study, the team explores the development of a Smart Building Monitoring System that integrates both Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Structural Dynamics Monitoring (SDM) to enhance safety, efficiency, and research potential in built environments.
At the Ashraf Islam Engineering Building (AIEB) on the campus of Tennessee Technological University, SDM systems—including accelerometers and strain gages—were embedded during construction to enable real-time measurement of both human-induced vibrations (like footsteps) and large-scale events such as seismic activity.
