Criticality of Chemical Compatibility in Liquid Cooling

Liquid cooling of electronics is being utilized in a wide range of applications and environments from high-performance computing, datacenters, 5G, EV fast charging, and medical equipment to lasers. The liquid cooling systems for these applications can be closed-loop, single-phase immersion, two-phase immersion or direct-to-chip cooling systems. Regardless, component material compatibility is critical to performance. Thinking holistically when specifying components is important as the fluid selected essentially “connects” all components and subcomponents in the wetted loop.

A variety of subsystems and components make up the architecture that is critical to the successful and reliable operation of any cooling system. Each system component has the potential for interaction with other component materials. Therefore, materials’ interactions and dependencies must be considered. Interestingly, system operating issues or red flags may manifest in highly engineered parts such as quick disconnects (QDs.) As avoiding leaks is so critical, understanding materials of construction and their potential interactions is paramount.

  • Coolant options range from water, ethylene glycols, mineral oils to refrigerants and dielectrics – each with varying cost and toxicity
  • Metal alloy components and sub components can pose risk per galvanic potential
  • Polymers and elastomers are commonly used and offer many benefits but fluid compatibility is key to avoid leaching or structural and dimensional changes
