Machine drivelines are generally designed to withstand the torque load from the process being performed, as well as the torque load required for accelerating up to operating speed. The larger the rotating mass, the more likely a mismatch exists between the start-up torque and the energy released in case of an abrupt or unintended stoppage – the results of which can cause catastrophic damage to equipment. Mechanically resettable overload safety devices can prove critical in preventing mill downtime by quickly and safety disconnecting drivelines in case of blockages, protecting belts, shafts, universal joints, and gearboxes from excessive torque, and facilitating a quick reset without the need for special tools.
